An Agreement was signed on 8 February 2017 that brings a national minimum wage into existence. View Agreement here.  

  1. How much? The starting national minimum wage will begin at R20 per hour. Farmworkers will be phased in starting at 90%, but will be brought up to 100% within 2 years. Domestic workers will be phased in starting at 80% but will be brought up to 100% within 2 years.
  2. When? This takes effect from 1 May 2018.
  3. Who? No business will be excluded. If an employer cannot afford the minimum wage, they will be able to apply for exemption for up to 12 months.
  4. How? A Commission will be established to monitor this and to decide on the amount it will increase every year.
