On 30 June 2014, President Zuma signed the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Bill into law. This now re-opens the lodgement of restitution claims for a period of five years – from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2019. Although the claimants are supposed to present supporting documentation when lodging a claim (i.e. title deeds, PTO’s and other documentary evidence of the existence of land rights), where such documents are not available, they will be assisted with affidavits. This opens the process up to a lot of subjectivity and potential abuse.
